Laptop Running Hot? Possibly Overheating?

Hey guys. :o

I have a Dell Inspiron E1505 and I believe that it is possibly overheating. My reason for this is because the unit gets pretty warm after running for 15+ minutes...the bottom of the laptop and the keyboard get mildly warm.

About 2 months after getting the laptop, the motherboard fried, and I had to replace it. I just got it replaced not too long ago, and it was quite expensive...

I am wondering if my laptop could possibly be overheating, and maybe that is why the motherboard fried in the first place, and the possibly explain the bottom of the laptop being warm (or is this normal)?

How can I monitor the CPU and other hardware temperature of the laptop?
How can I keep the laptop and its hardware cool? Would a docking station help keep it cool? If so, can anyone recommend me one for my make/model of my laptop?

I doubt overheating caused your motherboard to break. If it was overheating, the bottom wouldn't be "warm", it'd come close to burn you if you touch it. Check the temperature of your CPU when you feel that your laptop gets warm.
 
Yeah, "warm" doesn't do that. If you're like me and my laptop, an Asus:

  • Your computer takes your skin off
  • Your processor is currently topping 100 degrees posting this with nothing else running
  • Your X1700 graphics card is idling at 86 degrees
  • Your hard drive is mysteriously only 32 degrees and cold to touch (???)
  • Your screen hinges have fallen off

then thats a problem. In your case, "warm" isn't the problem. Download speedfan and check some temperatures for us.

Alright, SpeedFan is showing the following temperatures:

HDD: 48
Temp1 [?]: 37
Core 0: 45
Core 1: 49-51 (showing flame)

All degrees are C...
Please help..I think that's very hot for them?? And only thing open was SpeedFan, so it was basically in idle!

That's not hot at all. I've seen my laptop go near 90ºC without much trouble.
 
yep, your in the clear. I wouldn't worry until it gets over 85 C.

Laptops are always warm after being on for a while, though if it really bothers you cooling pads help keep laptops' bottoms nice and cool (while lowering your temps a healthy dose).

As for your motherboard frying I think it's just bad luck. Motherboards occasionally die for no reason..like all electronics.
 
Haha!!! What about when your laptop is topping 130 like mine sometimes does? The keyboard practically melts!

I really think it should go back to the manufacturer. . .
