Laptop screen goes black only when plugged in

Hi,

Please advise,

I have a dell inspiron 510m XP OS

When the laptop is plugged in it goes black after maybe 2 min after startup. If I keep it plugged in for a few hours (laptop on, but screen black)it charges the battery enough to unplug the power cable , turn off the latoptop, turn it back on and use for about 20min


If I dont plug the cable in the screen does NOT go black. But the battery will only last 20 min or so. As soon as I plug in the power cable the screen goes black.

Should I buy a new battery? Or a new power cable? or something else that needs to be sorted.

If you're only getting 20 minutes on a charge, a battery is probably a good idea.
 
True, but would an old batt cause the screen to go black when plugged in? I dont mind just keeping it plugged in
 
There is definitely an issue going on. Just plugging and unplugging the charger shouldn't make the screen go black. Not sure if this is a driver issue or motherboard issue with the introduction of AC/DC power involved.
