Laptop screen issues..

I have a Sony Viao - about 2 years old. A few months ago the screen stopped working. You can hear the computer coming on itself but the screen stays black. Someone said it may be my video card? Others say its a wire thats loose. Any ideas?

Have you tried plugging an external monitor into it and seeing if it works?

When you hear the computer, do you hear it booting to windows, play the startup sound, and such? If you simply hear the harddrive spin up but never think/go to windows, it's probably a motherboard problem.

Also, as codeman said, try it with an external monitor. It's fairly common to have LCD problems.

Try to use a torchlight and shine on the screen and report back what you see.

I have tried to hook it up to an external moniter and it won't do it. I never hear windows restart but I don't know if last time it started if I had my sound on or off. I took it to a repair shop and they told me a wire or something may be loose but they couldn't repair it. I talked to Sony and they were going to charge me $500 which seems a bit extreme to me. I will try the flashlight thing and get back to you. Thanks.
