Laptop shuts down and boots up on its own.

My dad's been complaining that his laptop frequently shuts down. After booting up sometimes it'll load Windows and then shut down, other times it won't get past the Toshiba boot screen. The funny thing is when it shuts down, a few moments later it'll boot up by itself and shut down. This cycle will go on and on and on... I tried just using the AC adapter thinking it was a battery issue but it isn't.

Is it overheating, my dad's Toshiba and my HP sometimes overheat, shut off and turn back on

Random shut down and reboot is a classic symptom of a virus. It used to happen years ago on my PC. Update your AV and run a full scan.
