Well i got a compaq presario 700 (girlfriends old laptop) and trying to figure out whats wrong with it. It will just shutdown automatically even if AC is plugged into the adapter. It shuts off completely, when you turn it back on, bios is all cleared and you have to re enter in time and any bios changes.

also, if you were to have the laptop on and disc. the AC adapter, the fully charged battery dies in a matter of 10 seconds, you can watch the percentage drop by the 10's per second.

any ideas?

Its probably the battery faulty or on its way out but im not sure.

Wait for someone with a little more knowledge to help ya out bud.

First problem sounds like a possible BIOS battery issue. Second sounds like a common main battery issue. The bios backup batteries can usally be fairly cheap to swap out. As you might know desktops use button cell batteries. Little 1.5v(I don't remember the number right off) Some laptops use the same kind, some have special batteries. I'd suggest finding a manual about the laptop and see if there's anything about it. Try switching that battery as most shouldn't be more than about $5.

Switching battery ( the CMOS) or the physical battery?

I didn't think those little 1.5'ers crapped out, had mine in one of my desktops now for 7 years..but i'll give that a shot.
