Laptop shutting down randomly

Hi everyone. I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post this, but I need help.

My laptop (HP) has been shutting down randomly. I've run virus tests, and there were no viruses. I've deleted all the spyware and all that stuff. So I'm ruling that out. The one thing that was strange was that during the virus scan, it said that for a boot thing (sorry, I forget exactly what) there was a reading error, and for two files there was "change." I'm using AVG Free 7.5 if anyone knows what those results mean. Here's a screenshot of what I'm talking about. As you can see, the first item (boot) didn't show up this time:

I've started in safe mode and the computer was able to stay on all night. I've noticed that it can stay on longer when I disable the Internet connection. However, it will shut down most during boot and startup regardless of Internet connection.

Does anyone know what to do? I've read about cleaning out the inside of the desktops, but I'm not sure how I would clean out a laptop. I'm not the best when it comes to computer hardware.

Any help would be appreciated.

I can only tell you that the "shell32.dll" is in the correct directory and will change as windows updates.

"ntoskrnl.exe" is again in the correct directory and will change.

Choose ignore in your anti virus setup.

this a very grim thing my friend. HP's are notoruis for this. I'm sure you've thought it might be overheating. download a pc wizard or something to check your temps but i doubt thats it. the best advice there is to try a couple different bios updates addressing certain symtoms. you can download them from a few sites off google. But there's not even that much hope there. Most people have reported better labtops only lasting a few weeks untill back to normal. Could you give me some more info on how you saw this problem develop? Did it start with games? Is it only doing a restart? Does it show an option for safe mode? Does it ever not turn at all? Did it slowly get worse? Run a lot of media? nething else you can think would be awesome, someone has to fix this. Enough people need ti complain to HP, they might have to recall and fix this even outside of a warrenty.

email me with any info [email protected]

It goes off completely, it doesn't restart. I have to hit the power button again to turn it back on. However, it does turn on every time I try to turn it on.

When I turn it back on, I get one of two screens: the safe mode(s) or normal mode selection, or the option to run a startup repair program. I've done safe mode and it worked fine. I've also done the repair program and it found nothing wrong.

There is no specific time it usually restarts either. It might happen 5 seconds after I turn it on, right before or right after I log in, or 5-10 minutes after I've been using it already. It's completely random it seems.

I don't do anything extreme with it. I listen to music, go on the Internet, and use Microsoft Office. That's pretty much the extent of what I do on the laptop.

Also, I've had this laptop since last May (May 2007), and have had no problems until yesterday. It seemed to happen out of nowhere. It's running Vista. Not sure on the exact specs though. I'll have to find that out.

try the bios update. check your system log to see if it's crashing. defrag your hardrive if ya want. take your computer off auto shutdown for system crash and enable error message.

damn i was hoping i wouldn't have too! lol.

The bios update is a download. just go on google and look it up under HP bios update.

Right click on MY COMPUTER, click on MANAGE then go to the PERFORMANCE LOGS to check system record.

Right click on Your C drive to defrag your labtop it's under properties.

Control Panel, system, advanced, start up and then recovery settings, its under system failure. Good lUck!
