I have a Dell Inspiron 600m made in 2003. It has a 1.5 gig processor and 512 mb ram. The HD is 30 gig and its only about 2/3 full. Its running Windows XP for home.
It gets slower and slower all the time to boot up. I timed it today and it was 15 minutes before the green light went out, indicating it was finished loading. The Task Manager shows 70 processes running. Under "normal" conditions, the CPU usage is only 5 or 10%, but at startup it pegs 100%.
My only software is Office and several engineering programs like AutoCad LT. There are no games at all on it. I have not added anything in the last year except for some pictures and word and excel files.
It seems like it gets slower all the time. When it was new (and even a year ago), it would boot up and be ready to run in a few minutes. When it is running, it works perfectly though.
I recently uninstalled every program that I don't use regularly, and deleted old files. Basically that made no change.
The funny thing is that I also have a 2005 Dell desktop with a 2.3 gig processor (but only 256 ram) and it has been acting the same way lately. However, in this case, I have added NOTHING since new and the hard drive is less than 25% full. It shows about 56 processes going.
Any suggestions on how to speed this thing up?
