Laptop Slow to Startup

I have a Dell Inspiron 600m made in 2003. It has a 1.5 gig processor and 512 mb ram. The HD is 30 gig and its only about 2/3 full. Its running Windows XP for home.

It gets slower and slower all the time to boot up. I timed it today and it was 15 minutes before the green light went out, indicating it was finished loading. The Task Manager shows 70 processes running. Under "normal" conditions, the CPU usage is only 5 or 10%, but at startup it pegs 100%.

My only software is Office and several engineering programs like AutoCad LT. There are no games at all on it. I have not added anything in the last year except for some pictures and word and excel files.

It seems like it gets slower all the time. When it was new (and even a year ago), it would boot up and be ready to run in a few minutes. When it is running, it works perfectly though.

I recently uninstalled every program that I don't use regularly, and deleted old files. Basically that made no change.

The funny thing is that I also have a 2005 Dell desktop with a 2.3 gig processor (but only 256 ram) and it has been acting the same way lately. However, in this case, I have added NOTHING since new and the hard drive is less than 25% full. It shows about 56 processes going.

Any suggestions on how to speed this thing up?

GypsmJim,

Do you run any clean up programs? CCleaner, Spybot, Adaware anything like that? What antivirus are you using? Do any defrags? What all is running at startup go to start>run>type msconfig and go to the startup tab and let us know what all is in there... Just a start we can go from there...

I have Ad-Aware SE installed but it doesn't appear to start at startup. The anti-virus is MacAfee, and I've had it since the beginning, though there was a recent auto upgrade. I didn't correlate that upgrade to the start of slow running though. I recently installed Advanced system optimizer and have "cleaned the registry" with it, for what thats's worth. I also disabled everything in the startup that I though I could get along without. All that is left is the anti virus, sound card, etc. I have run a defrag and disc clean.

Thanks for your help.

Might want to download and run ccleaner and let it run. Make sure you check all check boxes and if you want also run the registry cleaner part.. If its still slow i would kind of point to mcafee as it can cause a system to run slow but also you might want to post a hijack this log to be analyzed..

Here is what I would do.
1.Get rid of that MACAfee stuff.REmove it completely from your HD.Install AVAST free home edition.

2.Install CCleaner and run it.

3.Click start>run>type msconfig then click on startup.Turn most everything off on there except Awill(your new avast) and windows stuff for starters. You may want to remove some of the windows stuff later on to speed up the boot up but for now just check everything else unless you know its something you want and need to start up on start up.
