Laptop Starts - Black Screen - Doesnt boot

Hi - I turned my laptop on and it flicks to a plain black screen with nothing - after about 5 seconds.

The fans are turning and I can here the hardrive all boot up.

Any ideas what to do?

I've tried the pulling battery out and pressing power to reset for 30 seconds.
 
You can also try with pulling your HD out also. (power cord, battery, HD).
Maybe the screen is the problem. Does the back light work?
 
Try hooking it up to an external monitor to be sure that it's booting up.

Also, is it possible that the signal isn't going to the monitor? On my laptop, if I hook it up to the TV and close it up the display signal automatically goes to the RCA video out on the back.

Have you recently added new hardware or opened the case for any other reason?

I haven't dropped it, its only me who uses it. I haven't added any new hardware or software.

I tried everything; all the removing the batter leaving on power - holding the power for 40 seconds etc - everything.

I don't think its the backlike because, when I turn it on the screen comes on black from the dull colour it is when its off.

I am thinking it may be the motherboard of the cpu? What do you think?
