laptop thru tv

i've been trying to run my hp pavilion laptop thru my tv. it's somewhat of an older tv set. i tried running a component cable from the tv to the laptop thru a vga adapter. didn't work. tried an s-video cable. didn't work. there are no hdmi or other inputs on the tv just component and s-video inputs. any suggestions?

s-video should work just fine. Test the TV's input to make sure it works, and if it does, test your laptops output somewhere else to make sure THAT works.
Also, when you attach the s-video you might have to switch displays on your laptop settings. I have a feeling that is the issue.
 
i have run other devices thru the same av inputs and i know the vga output on the laptop works. i've also tried changing the settings in the control panel to "duplicate" "extended" and "projector only" settings and it says that no monitor was found. when i connect the laptop the tv screen flashes then goes to black and it clicks every few seconds
