laptop to desktop hdd

hi guys, I need a bit of help.

I bought a laptop to desktop hdd adapter and I cant get it to work. I might have made a critical mistake but otherwise it wasn't going to fit. I clipped the center pin so my IDE cable woul go over it. now I cant get it to do anything. the desktop will either boot up or hand on a black screen. the laptop hdd spins but is never detected. I really want my pics back but I don't know how to get them...any ideaS?
 
Well my old technology is what was causing the problem. I must admit the cutting the pin off was a "doh" moment. The ribbon wire for my CD-ROM drive I have in my Dell has for some reason 39 pins. It's a standard 40 pin connector but one pin is filled in. So I cut it off not thinking it might ruin it...:o Well that was a bad idea. So we tried the connector in my uncle's computer, which has a standard 40 pin adapter. So I jerry-rigged the pin I messed up out of a piece of solid wire and connected everything. Worked like a charm after that. I got my info and just set the hdd aside...It's not going to serve any purpose now, as my PC can't use it. But now I have all my photos!!! And, I got my RAM. The tracking number said it had been delivered, and I was left wondering why I didn't have it. Well turns out it got left at the post office and later on today I got it...So everything worked out great!
