laptop to tv - which cable?

i want to connect an ordinary television to my laptop as the second screen. i think it will connect via the vga connection on my laptop but most vga to rca cables i have found say they are suitable for HDTVs, projectors and anything else with a red, green blue input. and likewise for vga to scart. i know it is possible to do it but i just want to be sure i am buying the right cable. does anyone know if vga to scart will be ok?

apparently i need to check my graphics card has a tv-out function through the vga connection. how do i find this out?

What video card do you have? I had some problems with weak video card on a large screen.

Some laptops you have to hit the fn key and another key to get it to work, or better yet go into your display settings and see if you can do multiple monitors there?

its an HP-compaq presario F500 the tv is just a normal non-HDTV hitachi
