laptop to TV

I want to use my lcd tv as a monitor.
The computer has a vga out but the tv does not have a vga in. The Tv has a S-video in but the computer does not have a S-video out.

Is there any way I can connect this computer to the TV?

I looked at something like that but was told that it would not work...something about different signals or frequency's. They said that cable is for stuff like connecting a dvd player to a projector.

are they wrong? will this work?
