hey i got a new laptop but i was wondering why it somtimes turns off on its own? It didn't really turn off, more like in safe mode, but i didn't click the power button. So anyone know what I mightve clicked or mightve happened?

The power settings are probably setup to shutdown/hibernate/sleep the laptop after a given period of time. Go to the Control Panel and then Power Options to change this.

ummm...overheating? When exactly does it turn off (e.g. are you gaming, or just doing light stuff, etc.)? Are you sure the vents are not blocked?

its brand new alienware laptop. On the sidebar it says using 50% ram and 8% cpu usage.

My power is on balance, half battery life an half performance.

on you laptop somewhere the monitor and the base meet there will be this little stub that you can push down. when you push it the computer goes into sleep mode or standby mode. it is there so that when you close your monitor the system goes into standby or sleep mode. your laptop might have it i am not sure. but yeah that could be it. you might be hitting that by accident.

Did you check to see if/when it will go into standby or when it would shutoff?

no. i guess maybe they got rid of this on the newer ones, but before there was this very little button and i mean very little button that had no markings but would put the computer into standby mode if you closed your monitor since when you close your monitor. the monitor would push the button down. or when you pushed that button yourself

it says turnoff display 5 minutes on battery, 5 minutes plugged in.
It also says put the computer to sleep 15 minutes on battery, and 1 hour plugged in.
