Laptop will not connect to Server (Help pls.)

For some reason I am unable to connect to my Mozilla Firefox browser (or any other websites). Message coming up 'cannot connect to Server'.

Yesterday I downloaded Registry Fix from Mininova onto my laptop and desktop. A number of errors were found on both and I clicked to fix them. Both computers continued to work ok.

Earlier today I put the laptop on and got the above message when I tried to connect to the internet. I am wondering whether the Registry Fix scan has caused the problem? My desktop is working fine.

I have checked the Windows Firewall on the laptop and Firefox is enabled. Does anyone have any ideas what the problem may be please?

ALWAYS backup the registry before changing it. Typically repair software won't harm it, but there's always that possibility...

Well first off, can you connect to anything? The desktop, the router (192.168.1.1, or something like that...)? How do your ip settings look. You could compare them between the computers by going to RUN, type CMD, then ipconfig /all.

first open Firefox and go to File and make sure "Work Offline" is NOT checked.

Next if that doesn't work go to Network Connections and right click "Local Area Connection" and select "Repair"

If that doesn't work try re-starting your router.

If your laptop is using a wireless connection you can try disabeling your wireless and re-enabeling it and see if it finds the connection again

If none of those work...re-install your network cards driver...the registry program may have deleted a registry key for the network card thus making it unable to use.

Options I can think of...

are you using a router or just a modem ?
what type of connection DSL , Cable ?

not trying to step on ur foot!!

but she said seh has a laptop and a desktop and ran the reg tool on both...and now only the laptop can't get on the network....one would assume she has a router...

and if not...i apologize....AND the source of the problem has been found lol

Many thanks for your responses.

The Registry software did backup files. I have restored the information but I'm still getting the same problem.

I have restored the computer but with no success. Still not connecting to server.

I have just noticed the icon in the task bar is saying 'Acquiring Network Address.

Have just done as adviced and clicked on RUN, CMD and ipconfig/all. The black screen has come up and I have noticed that IP Address has 0.0.0.0.

I have brought the same info up on my desktop and the address is there. How do I type it onto the laptop on the black screen?

:D thats ok you never know I have had calls from people the dont have routers and unplug one computer to use the other. this week i spent a hour on a call assisting a lady setting up her VPN before i figured out that was what she ws doing

now i am assuming the laptop is wireless , try to disable the WPA/WEP if you are using one attempt to connect and verify you get a IP address if so then reset the security on the router and attempt again. if not reinstall the wireless drivers on your laptop.

I went into network connections, clicked on Wireless Network Connection and have clicked repair wireless network connection.

At the moment there is a box saying Windows is taking the following action - Renewing your IP address. But it's been doing that for about 1/2 hour! In the details panel it says 'Encryption Disabled'.

How long should it take for it to renew the IP Address?

Also, how do I re-install the wireless drivers? I have an installation CD.

Would I have to un-install everything then put the CD in to install the whole programme again?

Sorry to have to ask such basic questions, but I'm not very knowledgeable about computers.

I inserted the installation CD. It did not appear to go through the whole of the installation, it installed drivers, LAN etc then came up with a message saying it had finished the maintenance work - Finish. It didn't ask me to insert the Belkin Adaptor, or run the Wizard at the end to actually install the software.

I am still unable to connect to Server. Still no IP Address. Tried to 'renew IP address' without success.

I was sat here until 1.15am this morning trying to sort this out. I have just read a posting on a computer forum site about a similar problem and the person was advised to reboot the router - in case it wasn't sending the IP address to the other computer. I've just done that and miraculously, it has worked!

I am now able to connect to Firefox ok.

When I was trying all different things yesterday to try and solve the problem, I restored what the Registry Fix programme had done. As that didn't work, I restored the system back to the 21st July to before I downloaded the Registry Fix.

I am wondering whether I now need to restore back to yesterday in order to uninstall Registry Fix from the system?
