laptop will not restart

I have a Dell Inspiron E1505 and I recently tried to install itunes on it. For some reason an installation error occured and the computer froze. I left it alone for awhile and came back and it was unfrozen and the error box was no longer there. I dont know if that has anything to do with my computer not being able to restart or shutdown but i thought I would just give some background information. So the real problem is I just cannot get my computer to restart, I press the power button...nothing happens. I tried to go to start menu and restart it...nothing happens. I tried just letting the battery run out till it turns off, but as soon as I plug the laptop back in it just resumes rather than restarting. I know this may seem dumb but I cannot figure out how to restart or just turn off the computer. Help Please....Thanks.

If it runs out of battery, it will save where you're at and hibernate. What you can do is remove the battery and then unplug it. By the way, have you tried holding down the power button for 5 seconds?
