Laptop Won't boot

I picked up a used Compaq Presario 1500 from a friend for next to nothing. She had problems with it over the years... power cord broke, wouldn't always boot, etc. I've read that these are fairly common problems, especially an issue where the power plug on the motherboard loosens and needs to be replaced. Anyway, when I plug it in now I see the Power LED is on and that the battery meters says the battery is low but absolutely nothing else happens. I do not hear any sounds from the laptop nor can I do simple things like open the DVD.

Any thoughts? I did see that others recommended holding down the power button for 30 seconds with everything disconnected. I did this with no results.

So are you saying that the unit won't power on? or does it go into Windows, but won't let you watch a DVD and there's no sound?

I mean absolutely nothing happens. No bios page or sound of anything happening internally. But like I said, I do see the power light on like it is getting juice.

bad mobo? any way to reset bios without voiding your warranty by opening it up?

It's way out of warranty. How can I do that by opening it up? I'm much more experienced with desktops.
