laptop wont read flash drives?

ok i really need some help because i need to transfer my data from my desktop so i can format it but my laptop says that the device is not formatted whenever i plug it into the laptop this happens with both sd cards and usb flash drives can someone please tell me where i am going wrong or what i might be able to do to fix it?
 
it is a gateway with windows xp i also forgot to mention that the sd card and usb flash drive work in both of my desktop computers so it is something to do with the laptop
 
one more thing. if i try to format it tells me that "format could not be completed" in an error message and then once in a while it shows format completed but i open it and the folders are still there but i cannot access them and if i open a word document it's all some weird symbol in place of all the old sentences that used to exist there.
 
does anyone have any suggestions? im really getting peaved i have even tried to reinstall the whole chipset, but still nothing. im about ready to just get rid of this thing
