right, im talking for a friend here who has just soent £1500 on his new comp.

The comp is fine when not playing games, but slows right down. Doesnt even run battlefield 2. He's looked at all the settings he can think of, graphics card, drivers etc. and nothing.

Spec:

MSW XP SP2 Home edition
Intel core2 6600
2GB DDR2 RAM
Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS
400gb SATA HDD

Any help is appreciated.

cheers

What power supply? It's possible that it isn't strong enough to power everything, and is causing the other components to not perform properly due to not recieving enough power.

possibly, but im dont know wether it would have that much of an impact, he also says he sometimes gets "bursts" of good performance too. he thinks it could be his gpu?

EDIT:: he has a 500W supply what would you reccommend?

A decent 500W unit will power that system without issues. What's the brand/model of the unit, and what's the amperage on the +12V rail(s) (it will be printed on the side of the unit).

It would also be worth checking his temperatures to make sure it's not overheating and throttling back.

are all of the fans operating correctly and connections made properly? It sounds like a heat or voltage issue to me. also check the bios and drivers

Everthing is fine. It's definatly the psu because I played a game and it ran like crap then I disconected my dvd drives and one of the case fans and tried again and it ran almost perfectly.
