Latitude 620 & External 1TB Seagate HDD

The internal hard drive on my Latitude had crashed and instead of purchasing an internal HDD replacement, my wife came home with Seagate's 1TB Expansion+ USB 2.0/3.0 drive.

Am I able to install an operating system on this drive and have it act as portable? If so, how would I go about doing this? I can either use Linux or Windows 7.

You can do it, but you have to configure BIOS to boot from the USB hard drive and it WILL be a lot slower than an internal drive. http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19456708

Best to buy an internal drive.

EDIT: I solved this issue by installing Windows 7 directly onto the external HDD with the WAIK method.
