If I have McAfee virus protection is it still necessary to have AdAware also ?
I used to have AdAware but haven't renewed it for a few years now. Do I need it and for what ? Thanks,

Peter,

I prefer Malware Bytes to AdAware. Use the free version.

Needs to be run manually, but does a very good job.

Agreed, definately get rid of Adaware and install Malwarebytes as its a much better program and constantly stays up to date on the latest malware. However, it doesn't update automatically unless you get the paid version.

I have used AdAware in the past on one desktop and a laptop we have. It finds mostly tracking cookies. Since you have McAfee I'm guessing you wouldn't need both but having more than one won't hurt anything as long as they don't scan at the same time, which would slow down preformance. But like the other replies I really like Malwarebytes, I've used Malwarebytes to remove several infections.

Is Malwarebytes compatible with McAfee ? Will it slow down the computer at start up because my computer is already slow enough especially since I installed Skype ?

It should be fine. It seems like a light program to have but heavy when it come to finding and ridding your system of infections. I have a few different antivirus programs on my computer and haven't noticed a difference in start up. You may want to look at what programs you have running when you start up. I know there was a program or something that you could view the programs that start on start up besides what is in the Window's start up folder.

Malwarebytes (at least the free version) doesn't offer any real time virus protection. Basically you run it only when you suspect and infection, it doesn't constantly run like a typical anti-virus. It will slow down your computer while it's running, but as soon as the scan is complete you'll be back to normal.

And yes, you can run it just fine with McAfee installed.
