can someone please tell me what good the specs for an lcd monitor mean. and tell me what you would want in order to have a nice lcd monitor. (meaning whats a good spec for all the categorys. thanks dudes.
and what is better for over-all performance, no gaming and what would be better for just gaming.

What I look for in a LCD:
1. Very important: It's a CRT :D
2. Low response time, 12ms avg, 16ms acceptable, 8ms or better preferable
3. That my hardware can handle whatever i intend to do with the LCD at the native resolution
4. Low dot pitch
5. Contrast and brightness that suits my preference

CRT and LCD are mutally exclusive (translation: LCDs sux0r) ;)

2) whats a low dot pitch?
For a CRT, 0.22mm or less, for a LCD, 0.29mm or less

3)what suits ur preference?
Well as per condition1, not an LCD. In either case thats my preference, not yours -- you're the one using it -- you gotta decide.

Lol

I always have to jump into Praetor posts (sorry) when it comes to LCDs. This is because he always propagates CRTs. Now I know I got into many arguments regarding the CRT war against the LCD. However, I still believe that the CRT technology is already surpassed in overall terms by the LCD monitors. The CRTs are big, not so eye-strain friendly, take up the whole desk and just look ugly in general. CRTs SUXOOR!

JAN :D

1. I dont want a dainty prissy display
2. Dont argue aesthetics because its an impossible argument (mostly since its opinion based).
3. As for eye-strain ... its hard to look at a LCD cuz its so damn ugly. And I'd rather a bit of eyestrain over ghosting anyday.

But seriously, if you note the serious portions of my comments, LCDs have yet to surpass CRTs ... and it will be some time before they do. Why? Quality. Yes LCDs are getting better and better but they have not come close to matching the quality from CRTs and thats a litteral fact.

For gaming, as long as you get a LCD with a maximum refresh of 14ms then you wont have much ghosting problems. The only issue there is that you need to make sure your system can handle whatever game you intend to play at the native resolution of the LCD screen (nonnative is hideous). I.e., dont buy a 1280x1024 LCD wanting to play Doom3 on a GeForce2MX hehe

and also.. Dead pixels happen soo easily on LCDs, and warrentys dont really cover Dead Pixels that good... just get a 17" Flat Screen CRT by Viewsonic or something... :)

= my 2 cents (sorry if it was bad)
