LCD monitor: Trying to decide between 20", 22" and 24". Do I need wide?

etc

What exactly do I get when I go "wide", like 22" wide?

What about 24" wide vs. 22"?

I have a 1908FP UltraSharp, am pleased with it (Having just upgraded from a CRT) but want someting even better. People tell me that 24" wide is the best, but why?
I have HDTV to watch movies on, don't need the computer.

I like Dell UltraSharp but are there any better choices?

yeah widescreen is a must these days

19in is minimal, any lower is too small.

you only need a bigger screen if you do alot of gaming or want to have a bigger desktop.

Honestly, I think a lot of the monitors we have these days are a little too big, but anyway... I think I would be very satisfied with a 17". But if you want a wide monitor that's like 2 feet across, I seen some pretty nice HP monitors at certain stores like costco. Great screen quality and well lit.

What exactly do you get with Wide, in any size?

I don't do any gaming... Don't watch movies. Thinking about a standard 4:3 22", or does 22" wide make more sense?

well i maintain that internet looks better on a standard 4:3 screen, but games and video's look better widescreen. so really it comes down to what you will be doing, just checking your mail and surfing the web or watching HDTV.

widescreen is a must it won't hurt

everything will look better on widescreen

also if you want a standard it would be stupid to waste money on a 22" monitor

i don't even see any standard 22" monitor on newegg LOL

Bigger isn't always better.

If you're not using your system for gaming or movies and are looking for an increase in productivity when multitasking, you may want to consider a 2nd monitor rather than upgrading one that already works well for you.

Fine. I was only trying to offer alternatives because of the extremely vague information provided.

In your case then, the only difference you'd see would be a small increase in horizontal desktop area.

I really like my Westinghouse monitor-I know it's not the greatest brand-but it's work for what I need it for-got it for less than $200 back in feb.

Meh... just get a 16 inche wide screen monitor from newegg for 139.99 free shipping =D

I have a viewsonic 22" ws it's very nice. I had a 17" standard lcd then went to a 19" ws to a 22"... I found the perfect match for me. I'm in the process of building my first comp. myself and need another lcd and I think I'm gonna stay with the 22" ws. I was looking at the 24", just a little to big for me. I can pick up a nice 22" ws for around 225.00 on sale. Just have to keep your eyes open.

I decided against wide anything. YOu cannot browse the web with it. Unless you open 2 or more windows.

Would be really nice for development however. Code in one window, compile in 2nd, run the program in 3rd, watch the log file in 4th.

I want 20" 3:4 ratio.

Def go wide, a 20" is sufficient, but even 22" widescreen is nice. Once you go larger than about 22", the prices just soar.

I would go 24 inch or bigger if you like gaming.I have went from 17" to 19" to 22" which is what I have now.Enjoyment of internet and gaming is much better now.The 22" native res. is 1680 x 1050 .The 24" is 1900 x 1200 which is very good I think. This is good and bad the 1680 x1050 is pretty good and and you can play high graphics games with a top card (hd4870 or gtx 280) at max settings or close to max(crysis...LOL)but from what I have read you might need to crossfire or Sli to max out the 1900 x 1200 res.The Hd4870 X2 might be different or so I am hoping.I plan to probably upgrade to a 28" 1900 X1200 so It would be nice just to need 1 card.2 cards is twice the money so it probably isnt cost effective just for the enjoyment of just having a max setting

Can you browse the web with 22" WS?
Meaning, can you stretch a window side to side and still get a good picture?

I tried that with 24" and it was mostly empty space on the sides. 24" for example is not designed for a single window but several, and I don't need that.
I wonder if 22" WS is the best compromise.

It's the height of my 19" UltraSharp standard but wider by 4".

Yes, you can browse the web on a 22" widescreen and it takes up the whole screen no space on either side. I think if you were looking at a 24" and the sides were blank, the screen was not adjusted properly. I really, really like my 22" and unless I can steal (GET AN UNBELIEVABLE PRICE) for a 24" I'm gonna stick with another 22". I'm gonna start looking in the next couple of weeks. The monitor I have now is a 5 ms response which is fast, for my new gaming comp, I'm thinking about a 2ms response. Probably won't matter either way, how fast is a millisecond - a thousandth of a second.....:D
