im looking into getting a lcd monitor for the first time and wanted to know if the higher the contrast ration the better the picture..what spec do i look for for good picture quality. can you guys give me some spec for a good lcd monitor

The higher the contrast and brightness the better. I would not go with anything lower then an 800:1 contrast, and 250cd/m2 brightness. You can find LCD's with 1000:1 + and 500cd/m2 +, which make the experience even better.

Most of the 22" monitors use TN panels. That means the color is going to be poor. However, if you don't care too much about color TN panels will give you the best value. Out of those monitors I would probably pick the Acer because I've never heard of x2gen and the Acer has HDCP support if you ever need it. Sure, the 500 cd/m2 brightness on the x2gen is great, but you'd probably end up turning the brightness down because it would strain your eyes.

More information on different types of panels can be seen here http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1039222.
