crt's have much faster response times, last longer, and dont have any dead pixels... unlike LCD, although LCD's sometimes look better since they use brightview technology or something to that extent, but i prefer crt's over lcd's if you dont consider the size difference.

I like LCD's. I found one dead pixel in my 17" and it's not noticeable with normal use. Responce times, even with my 8ms LCD are slower than CRTs, but I don't find it too distracting or anything.

You said aside from space saving, but have you ever compared a nice LCD to a CRT? You would not beleive how much more space they actually give you! And for me, it's nice because I'm so tall... See, my knees would hit my keyboard tray, but now I have room to put my keyboard on my desk and just completely remove the tray!

And finally, just how LCD's work, they are much better on your eyes...

depends on the refresh rate you have it set to.
at 60 Hz, your eyes get tyred after a while. but from 70+ Hz there is no problem anymore.
so the statement, there is no doubt that the LCDs are easier on the eyes., is not true ;) you just have to set them right

LCD's, they don't "burn" as easily as CRT's do by any means. That means they actually last longer. Sure your CRT might last you 7yrs+, but the image quality and screen calrity/brightness won't be very good.

Testimony from my friend, "I have this 19" CRT sitting here that replaced my LCD. It's purely for benching purposes. I'm getting dizzy from seeing the screen shake. It's so minimal but I still see it. After staring at LCD's for so long, I can't stand regular monitors. It's driving me nuts. Anyone like to donate and buy me the Apple 30" cinema display?"

It's that way with both my paretns too who use a 17" and 19" LCD. They get on my CRT monitor (which is using 85Hz refresh rate) and still complain the screen hurts there eyes, and it's "jsut different."

The thing I would like to know is if you game alot and you use an LCD monitor, how much is the response time going to affect game play? I mean, is it noticeable, and will it actually affect the way you play games, or is it such a short space of time for it to be comparable?

:)

Under 16ms is supposed to be perfect for gaming, no even noticable. Any higher and you might be able to tell.

The thing is that people tend to use crappy low res/Hz crt's with high dot pitch when comparing.
Still they have nothing against shelling out $400-500 on a LCD..

A trinitron or diamondtron at 12x10 or 16x12 @ 100Hz or above, flicker & eye strain? Come on.. :)

Hmm, I have a trinitron, but it doesn't go upto 100Hz...?

So if I had say...a 12 ms or an 8 ms LCD, which would be better for gaming, forgetting the fact that CRT's would still have a faster response time...

P.S. What is a CRT's response time?

CRT's dont have a response time. the response time of a LCD (is as far as i know, the time a pixel need to go from black to white, well.. a very dark grey to white.)
CRT's work with refresh rate's ;)
but.. what ive heard.. a CRT only needs a few micro seconds to change the colour :)

I think crt's are good for gaming and picture editing work, and that lcd's are perfect for office applications and space savers.

I have had gamers complain about ghosting at 4ms. CRTs have a response time of almost 0ms (Instantaneous). Also, a CRTs refresh rate is superior, as well as it's color. My Samsung 997DF operates at 1024x768 at 100Hz. It can also display black/white correctly, unlike most LCDs.

Also, LCDs have a fixed resolution. Meaning, you will never increase or decrease the amount of pixels you have. If an LCD comes standard with 1024x768, this means there are EXACTLY 1024 pixels in each horizontal line as well as 768 pixels in each vertical line, for a total of 786,432 pixels. That will never change.

CRTs are not fixed in this respect, as they spray electrons to the back of a phosphor coated glass. Electrons are flexible, and pixels are not.

as i sayd. CRT's only need a few micro seconds ( 1 micro secone is .01 ms ;) )
and LCD's dont have a refresh rate. it doesnt need to "redraw" the picture all the time. a LCD, ony changes the pixels it needs to.
and, a LCD can draw white propperly, it only cant do black :)
