legality of using Windows XP

Hello, I plan on building a new computer and was wondering if it was legal to take the CD I got with my DELL and use the OS on that, on this new computer?

Legal or not, I don't believe it'll work. I'm quite sure once those copies have been activated, they'll only work on the original Dell machine they were installed on.

The disks they usually provide you with pre-built machines are usually just recovery disks. From personal experience, also, I've found that the OS are slightly different from the ones you buy commercially. For example, I replaced the mobo out of my Compaq and found that I had to re-install XP, as the OS wouldn't load with the new mobo......

If you still have XP on the dell computer i believe it is illegal but when i tried to do that it let me use it on one other computer once and when i had to reinsall windows i wouldn't work (the activation)

I dont know about XP, but the 98 recovery disks from HP were designed to only work with the specific computer they were sold with. I replaced the hard drive in an old HP and the recovery disk wouldnt work with the knew HD. So I would just buy an OEM copy of XP.

i dont think it will work either. I tried it with a sony disk and it said "These disks are not for this computer." or somethings, like that. so i just bought Vista. [:
