less expensive processor

this is the whole computer which i am planning to build

The gamers are crazy about the C2 lineup due to clock speeds and oc capabiliy while most lesser models will easily run the games out. For multitasking a dual core cpu would see the best results. At this time that was the lowest priced model available at newegg. The E6300 is the lowest C2 model with the E6400 being the next number seen.

Consider waiting for the Intel Core 2 Duo 4300 to be released on January 21st. The only thing different is that it runs at 200Mhz FSB instead of 266. However, it just makes overclocking easier.
 
You don't need one, but they offer the best performance for the money currently (especially if you overclock them)
 
the pent d is slower.... downgrade the mobo from the 965p-ds3 to the 965p-s3 that should free up some cash
 
The dual core cpu over the older single cored models will be faster stock for the two more obvious reasons. With a higher clock speed then many older cpus you see a speed increase there by so much. But the real gain is the second reason where you now have two cores contained in one cpu. That's a close approximate to having two separate cpus on the same board in many ways processing data from one main program with one core while handling background services and apps with a second one.
 
Unless you find a high end Pentium D, you may not get speed stepping or 65 nm technology. Both are designed to keep your CPU cooler than other CPUs. Not because you care about the little extra energy CPU consumes, but because the extra fan noise will drive you crazy.

I believe all Core 2 Duo are 65 nm. Not all of them may have speed stepping, but then their speeds are already low.

Just something else to consider, since you want something better than before.
