Let's have fun!

Hi guys,

While building my first custom pc, I realized that it was very fun to do, but also that it was still worth doing it, even if a lot of people think it's isn't anymore. The pc I built cost about 700$ (without the screen), and for that price, you get a crappy pc at Costco.

So, I've had and idea. The most fun I've had during the whole process was to actually search for the different components while respecting a budget. I was a big challenge, but I loved doing it, and I'm sure a lot of people on this forum think like I do.

Which brings me to the main subject of this thread. I thought it would be nice for us to do some teamwork and try to build the best pc possible for a given price. But it wouldn't be much of a challenge if the price was too high. So, what if we tried to build the best pc for 450$, OS included? (But not the monitor, let's be realistic)

Here is my version of the CHEAPO-PC v.1

Computer case + power supply: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811162061

Motherboard + onboard video chipset: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128504

CPU: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103903

Dvd burner: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827118039

DDR3: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231275

OS: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116986

Hard drive: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136073

Total price including shipping and taxes: 427.61$

Not that bad for a computer that has those specs:

- AMD Athlon II X2 250 Regor 3.0 Ghz, 4 Gb DDR3, 500 Gb of hard drive, ATI Radeon 3000, 500 w power supply, dvd burner and windows 7 home premium 64 bit. :)

So, want to give it a try? I'm sure some of you will come up with cheaper and better pc's. The objective is not to make a super budget gaming pc, but a good overall pc that can handle softcore gaming and everyday tasks.

Take care and have fun,

I haven't actually gotten around to buying and building my PC yet but I'm having a lot of fun scrutinizing every last item on Newegg to make sure I get the absolute best for my hard earned cash.

It is fun, not exactly sure why, but it is!

I'll see what I can find. :)

Edit: I'm having issues with the links. It always does this with Newegg.ca link. It opens up a new blank tab and then redirects the tab I was on with the forum to the main Canadian Newegg page. Weird.

Not that this is a bad idea, but you should re-work your build. One of the big reasons people build is to save money. So, you could build that or you could get this and save over $100

Though that is a slim-line. This is closer to your build (but with a bigger hard drive), though still around $70 less.

Like I said. Cool idea, I'm just not a fan of component searching unless it's for my own rig, haha.

It is extremely fun, I don't know why either. Probably because it adds another level of challenge to the objective of building a pc, which can be a challenge in itself! :)

Yeah, it happens once in a while. Try later, maybe. The links just started acting up for me too...

I do think this is fun, but we really get so many requests a week to build an actual computer for so many people, we should really spend time doing that.

Well when I was following your other thread about your build I would click on your links to see what you were getting and bam it would do that. I haven't had a single Canada link work. I'm in Chrome by the way.

I'm building a computer a lot like yours. Gaming computer for under 700 without a monitor. My total is at $683.91. What are your parts so I can see if there's anything you have that would be a better option for me. :)

Yeah, they are hard to beat, aren't they? Maybe it's not THAT worth it to build a pc when it's a basic one you are building... But hey, it's way funnier and more interesting to build it yourself, right? You don't get that whe you just buy it from bestbuy...

However, it could be fun to upgrade one of these! :)

Take care,

Yeah, but don't you think they could just follow this thread and build their pc's from that too? I think it could be really useful to some people...

Yeah that's really similar. Mine has a GTX 550 TI for the video. 1TB HDD, Same mobo, 3.2 GHZ rather than 3.4 CPU, similar case (Challenger), 600 watt rather than 500 but same Corsair series, and I only have 4 GB of RAM.

Looks like a great build! Hope it serves you well and you get your Windows 7 issues sorted out.

i built one for my dad's work, and that came to i think $550. It had I3 3.2ghz, 4 gig RAM, 500gb hard drive, Gigabyte mobo miniATX, an Antec case and a 500 watt power supply. Actually quite a good computer, even though all it does is sit under the bench and run the key machines

Not bad at all! It was a bit more expensive because of the processor, probably. But still, good job! And it will probably last him for a long time. :)

yeah, i wanted to get him a processor with the fastest architecture that's nice and reliable and cool. I had a spare socket 1155 cooler lying around, so that went on. Sits at around 24-27 degrees all day.
