hey guys, new member here, i've been reading this forum for a while and wanna know what you think of this possible setup...

my goal is to run windows vista- SMOOTHLY. keyword there :)

post up any suggestions

Gigabyte GA-965P-DQ6 motherboard
ASPIRE X-INFINITY ATXB6KLW-BK/420 CASE
VIEWERA V201D-B LCD MONITOR
SAPPHIRE 100146UL RADEON X1600XT VID CARD
SOUND BLASTER SB0570 SOUND CARD
THERMALTAKE CL-W0075 LIQUID COOLING SYSTEM
PATRIOT DUAL CHANNEL 2X1GB DDR2 800 (PC6400) RAM
INTEL PENTIUM D 805 SMITHFIELD EM64T PROCESSOR (LGA 775 SOCKET)

As you can see the sound card is a cheepy, that may change as thats not so big of a concern to me and ill probably upgrade it just lemme know what you think of the rest- i wanna stay around the price range of the stuff that's already listed but if there are any cheaper solutions that'll work better i always like saving money :) thanks guys and lemme know what you think

Thats a tough one because vista may still be off aways in the future. And to gaurentee it will run smoothly would mean waiting until very close to its release date and seeing the requirements, and the products available at the time.

my big thing is focusing on the beta. people said 256 mb of video ram is needed to run the aero effects (i think thats what its called???), other than that i am just looking to build a strong machine that wont be outdated tomarrow, i want to build a beast of a machine for around like 1200 so lemme know what i can try

Probably AM2, with an x2 processor 3800+ or around there, maybe like the 4200+. Try and get like 2gb of ram for vista. A higher end video card a 7900 or x1900 should do the trick. I mean its just there is speculation vista won't be out for a while and when it does direct x 10 is coming out so your video card will be outdated, its just too unsure to build one specifically for vista right now.

good point, i was thinking about the directx issue thats why my video card was "lowerer end" if you know what i mean, i wanted to go with a dual gpu card later down the road.

What I would do is don't worry about vista right now, just build a good comp. I'll put one together when I get home and you can tell me what you think.

cool thanks, i looked at some other threads on this forum like this one and i am looking into some amd dual core processors like you suggested and am gonna look into that

i would never a PC based off of a beta. when u download and use a beta version of software, u r a "guniea pig" so anything could go wrong. thats companies put beta versions out so other people can test them and they get feedback on the problems. for all u kno, vista might not work with ur build. i think that it is a mistake and i would definitely wait for the real vista to come out.

thats a good point, i need a new machine and i like the things the beta has to offer and i want to build it not just for vista persay but i figure if i am building a beefy machine, why not make sure it can run the beta for the time being. i normally build a system a year and then sell the old one to family members of mine that need new ones so i am building a new one for myself. i am working on another setup at the moment ill post it later for comments.....
