Lets Keep it Clean!

I have been dealing with some far out computers. Like freaking infested you might say. Well I have been using a little combo each time "CCleaner" then "AVG Anti-Virus/Spybot" then I will run combofix ending it with a anti-virus (AVG-Free/Norton-07 lets not argue about anti-viruses. Now its pretty clean after that i'd just like to ask a few things like anything else I should use, and is another firewall besides the Windows one really needed? Along with when starting a good clean on a computer is there anything else to to keep pop ups and viruses at bay then just msconfig and shutting down some services and startups?

Well combofix is a tool to get rid of infection, it is not a anti-spyware. It scans only usual infected folders on your computer.

When dealing with a computer, we use (most of us here) Hijackthis logs to see what the infection is then, we use tools that will get rid of this infection. For example, if it is a Smitfraud infection, combofix won't get rid of all the infection, which can result in the "re-birth" of the infection. We have a special tool called SmitFraudFix that will get rid of it.

Hijackthis is not a beginner application, if you're interested in removing viruses and malware, I suggest you check out Malware Removal Forums, Bleeping Computer and check out their training programs :)

As for the preventive side of keeping clean, I use Ad-Aware 2007 free edition, I found it not long ago and it is really good :)

Hi, the Windows firewall according to me is a wimp. It just gives basic protection measures. Hackers have already found so many holes in it's build.
Using a good firewall such as COMODO or ZoneAlarm can protect you from intrusion attempts.
Use SpywareBlaster to protect yourself from bad BHO's and ActiveX controls.

Use a real-time protection anti-spyware programs such as Spybot Search and Destroy's TeaTimer to protect registry changes.

Webbenji's right, combofix is a tool used for malware analysis and removal! It's not to be used as a protection measure!!

Yeah I use the built-in firewall in my Norton Internet Security A-V, Firewall and A-S.

There's nothing bad with built-in-firewall people.
It's as good as any other I have never been hacked so far.
Besides, there is no firewall that can help you if you do some nasty job and expect to get hacked...

And you probably never will be. But the Windows firewall isn't bi-directional. It only stops incoming traffic. Meaning if something does get in there is nothing in place to stop it from sending information back out.

Check out this Microsoft article. It says the same thing I just did. Why Would I Consider a Third-Party Firewall?

Hello all

"CCleaner" then "AVG Anti-Virus/Spybot"

I use CCleaner which does a great job. AVG anti virus is good for the consumer but I would rather put money in and get an anti virus with a big detection scheme. However is should be fine for now.

Concerning windows firewall - I have never had a problem with the firewall part , just keep your system fully updated all the time.

However if you want all the nitty gritty features a firewall can provide then you will have to go and purchase one.

Remember: there are two types of people

1: Someone who hasnt been hacked.
2: Everyone else.

I agree with gamemaster, the built in firewall is ok. I used to have zonealarm but because of the sometimes near cryptic popups it gave, its outbound protection was near useless - other people in my family just allowed everything because they couldn't figure out what zonealarm was trying to tell them... My philosophy is to keep my pc clean in the first place anyway, and this approach has served me well for the last 2 years.

As for preventative measures, I really recommend siteadvisor, especially for inexperienced pc users. It offers a really good first line of defense - not visiting websites that host malware is undoubtedly the best preventative measure one can take.

Running Vista Home Premium, I use:

AVG Anti-Virus Free
Windows Firewall
AVG Anti-Spyware Free
Windows Defender
CCleaner (what a gem this is)
Spyware Blaster
Adaware2007

Keep it all updated and use it correctly, I think this combo can't be beat.

Knock on wood, I've never had a virus, never been hacked, and no significant amounts of spyware ever seems to show up in any scans I do. And I'm one who frequents the seedy side of the Net from time to time. Meaning I do p2p, watch porn, an view videos on sites like Ogrish.
