After reading the name of the thread I started out by worrying, then laughed and tried to guess how long before a slanging match would start with fanboys saying one console is terrible and the other is the greatest thing since sliced bread, my expectations were above 6 or 7 posts, but now I think about it, I'm not surprised.
On a more serious and relevant note, I only have a 360, no PS3, BUT if I got asked for a trade, I would consider it so long as I got similar games, because both have good and bad points, both are really 1 in the same, just a different shape, colour and have a different badge.
the 360 break down rate, if you do it in generations, the first one had a large breakdown rate, and as it got developed, it became less. Right now I have had my xbox for a year, no problems, I have a friend who has had his for 2, no problems, BUT his original got rrod, because he got it the day it came out, when they were fail boxes. In conclusion then, the 360 doesn't have an issue with reliability any more, you can quote facts and figures all you like, but the early, unreliable models will be pulling that figure down (or up, depends on how you look at it).
On PS3, you don't have to pay for online, unlike the 360, BUT the reason you pay for online on the xbox is because you get a quality service. On PS3, and this is speaking from experience, I have spent as much time as some PS3 user on the PS3 because I have friends with them that i use alot, relatives with them that i use when I visit them, so it is reliable, the games are generally laggier, the interactability with others isn't as good, online services aren't as good as those of the xbox. On the xbox, your friends list is much better, as is interactibility (word?) with them and the gaming on a whole, lag is much less, servers seem more readily available and your marketplace has more variety and faster downloads too. But ofcourse, the price tag is there which is why you get the higher quality, the PS3 has the perk of being free, even if the quality isn't quite as high...you can't complain about free stuff after all can you
Carrying on with the marketplace, Xbox has a larger range of films, both in HD and normal, games, addons etc than the PS3 and they are easier to navigate around and download.
Offline though, both are about on parr, they both have good games, they both have bad games, they both have cult games and fads, the PS3 probably has the edge because the graphics are marginally, and I mean very slightly, hardly noticably, better than that of the Xbox, but in certain scenes of games, that difference is massively noticable and it makes the difference. This is prefference, not fact, but I actually prefer the xbox controller over the PS3 controller, which makes the whole experience more enjoyable for me personally, but ofcourse, that will vary from who you ask.
For not gaming, ie. watching films, listening to music etc at the moment the PS3 has the edge, just because of blu ray, but, very soon the xbox will take over because of Sky player, the ever growing range of HD movies, Last.fm and facebook and Project Natal (come to in a moment). Now no, these aren't out yet, but on paper, if they give what they say they should, then the PS3 won't be challenging the Xbox too much, other than you can have a BluRay player, but ofcourse, not too much from Microsoft goes without one problem or another, so keep following the new software
Project Natal which I mentioned before if you don't know what it is is a piece of hardware and software Microsoft have developed which makes everything controllerless. What I mean is it is a camera that goes on your TV, like the wii sensor bar only with a camera too, and it can recognise your face to log you in, you can wave your hand to go through menus or select things by grabbing them on screen, you can talk to it to select stuff or change stuff on screen, you can have conversations and video calls with people with it, you can play games with it without controller, there are games that can understand your tone of voice and what you say to be able to respond correctly, that can see things that you give to it, that can see you there and put you in the game. Some say that like the wii, people will get it fro the gimmick but not really use it because thye want to sit still and game to relax, not jump around like a madman getting all tired and such, but I think because it simplifies everything in and out of game, it will work for everyone in some way. Sony on the other hand have developed a ball on a stick that can interact with stuff, can't remember the name of it (someone help me out ehre), but that is about as far as it goes. Imagine eye toy, but with a ball on a stick too, it will work and probably be quite fun, but compared to natal it is like putting a beaten up old banger up against the latest and greatest sports car, first impressions show one as being amazing and revolutionary, and one as being done before and nothing too exciting.
Now there may be some games that you want that are on one console and not the other, and that could be the deciding point, you may not care for the idea of natal and the online experience but have games that you want on the PS3 specifically, so the PS3 is the obvious choice. On the same level, you may want the better online and not mind paying for it and you may not be too fussed about missing out on the slightly better graphics, but there are games that you want that are xbox exclusive, so then obviously the Xbox is the one to pick
