This thread is a cleaned up version of my other thread Q6600 Kentsfield or E8400 Wolfdale?, which led to talk about the ati HD4870, then led to talk about motherboards that could support this card and has crossfireX...

I think i can compensate with the heat by using liquid cooling, but I'll have to learn to build custom liquid cooling systems because I've heard they're more effective. Omega has a few tutorials on it i think.

personally, i wouldn't go with any nvidia since there is always bugs, especially in SLI mode. have you considered the new HD4000 series? it's such a great value and performance that nvidia is desperate to stay competitive by lower prices of all their new GPUs. look how the GTX 280 when from $700 down to $500 in a few weeks right after the release of the HD4000

as for water cooling, it's a whole new category of its own. i haven't read the tutorial on here myself, but based on months of reading posts from XS, there's much to be learned about different configuration and each part/brand. most people WC not for heat but more as an exotic cooling hobby and the low noise over air. it takes a lot of time, money, and patience.

I am pretty much a complete ATI noob, and I've been researching nvidia products only for like the past couple months. What motherboard would y'all recommend that would support crossfire??

Yes i noticed that when i was watching this youtube of crysis on very high
settings Dx10 (1920x1200)

ATI HD4870 = up to 27 fps
GTX 280 = up to 35 fps
9800 GX2 = up to 32 fps
9800 GTX = up to 20 fps

These results were all when they were
outside, and not when they were in
a small building or looking at the ground.

But just think, what if you had 2 ATI HD4870?! and not near as expensive as the GTX 280, only about 5 frames slower on crysis.
I would just really like to buy two of these low priced monsters, so0O0o any ideas for a good crossfire mobo that would support the HD4870?

O yes and I prefer intel so that I can support the E8400
Heres the originall thread

I'd for with a Gigabyte or Asus board with a X38 or X48 chipset. dont know the name of the gigabyte boards, but the asus ones are called Maximus Formula (x38) and Maximus Rampage (x48)
