Lightening Strikes

My friends laptop recentenly was struck by lightening. Everything still seems to work except nothing will show up on the display. When hooked up to an external monitor it will display. I have reloaded Windows XP thinking it might have to do with the drivers so I know it's now a hardware problem. But I dont know what that would be? and if this is an easy fix?

From what you are saying, and if i have understood you correctly it sounds like the display has broken, as you say that you have hooked it up to an external monitor and it worked, so that would rule out all other components, and if this is true i don;t know how difficult it would be to replace an LCD display as i have never done anything like that before  . hope this helps you!

Yeah I was pretty sure that was it, but I have also been noticing the processor fan does not come on anymore. So now I feel I am limited to how long I can test more item on the laptop itself.

try shining a really bright light onto the lcd, you might be able to see if the lcd is still working; it might be that the backlight is broken. i dont know if there's a way to fix the light behind the LCD.

from what ive heard this is a fairly common failure

just curious. why was it struck by lightning? usually it rains before a lightning storm and it didnt get wet?

yeah lucky to say the computer was not hit directly, but through the ethernet or power cords. I am not sure which one as I guess current passes through both. But I have also noticed the fan is not working as well causing me to assume much more damage has been done. Oh and the laptop is a Toshiba dynabook, straight from Japan so parts may be sadly out of the question
