Lightscribe?

Is this any good? I've been looking around but I can't find much in the way of opinions.

In theory I like it; I can chuck my bulky old epson printer that barely manages to print cds anyway, but if the 'print' quality is faint, or if it takes 10 minutes to complete one, I won't bother.

Anyone have one, or use one?
 
looks ok in black and gray scale. its very light and hardly see it. takes about 40 min. don't make it a biggie. to time consuming. better off with a label maker for cd's instead. like toys though.not impressed. the novelty wore off after one. go ahead and get it. remember to turn the cd upside down for print. cd or dvd just more money. burner works well though.
 
It's pretty nifty. I only use it to label disks though, not put pictures and stuff on it.
Pictures look ok on it, but if you want a very nice, color picture as a label, do like tremmor said and get a label maker.
 
that leads to another question.
How come with all the technology we have we can not print to a cd/dvd in color? i would not think this is rocket science. ive never seen one though in a burner or directly to a printer. all require labels to print.

We can, labels can be in color, and printable cd's can be printed in color. But the problem with color "lightscribe" would be we would need at least 4 light sensitive dyes, then another 4 lasers at the color those dyes are sensitive to. This would not only cost quite a bit per disc, but i imagine the error rate would be high and so would the cost of the lasers(blue lasers alone are $150 or so, then you would prolly need a green and red laser in the drive..)
 
My Samsung 223Qs burn labels with graphics in about 10 minutes if it isn't too intensive. I used to do the apply label to the disc, but would occasionally get one off-centered. I have two Lightscribe burners, so while one is doing lightscribe work I can do whatever I need in the other one. Not a big issue to me.
 
So what, they actually take 10 minutes to write something on a disk? And this technology was actually approved? That's utterly pathetic!

I'll be buying a new printer then - I'd imagined it would've taken seconds to burn a label, not 10s of minutes.

actually i would not want it to print from a dvdrom. the printer works fine. does a nice job with labels. just thought it would look nice directly. maybe to much money though. oh well.
 
if you do a lot of cd's then sure go for it, they're not too expensive anyways.
i got one with lightscribe, but never used it.
instead i mark on the cd what's in it with a sharpie, works every time :)
 
We have just bought a hp mini pc with lightscribe and if your looking to put multicoloured images on cds its no good But if you want to put a small logo and text It is so Fab it doesnt need refilling in ink etc because it uses lasers I would definetly reccomend getting one .. Only one thing lets it down I do home movies and my lightscribe dvds dont work in my 2nd pc or my downstairs dvd player ...
 
I have never really found any logical reason to use Lightscribe. Basically, it's just a cool thing to brag about. But even then, it's not that cool. Plus, the special media needed to burn labels in it costs more.

I'm fine with just using a Sharpie Marker or printing a label. I usually opt for the marker though...faster.
 
I agree, even though I use it from time to time.

Same... ive had lightscribe on two of my computers so far, have used it maybe 3 times. Discs are just too damn expensive..
 
Personally I think lightscribe is worth it. With labels, there is a chance that it will start peeling. I just don't like that it can't do color and it takes too long, usually about 12 minutes for me.

For me I don't use lightscribe that much so when I use it I don't care that it takes a few minutes. Now if I was doing a bunch of them, I would go a different route.
