Limited or no connectivity

I've got a computer that was originally a school computer and it wont connect to the internet. It gives me an ip address of 169.254..... and a subnet mask of 255.255... Does anybody have any idea what might be causing it?

I take it due to the school settings it is assigning itself a school IP address,

do you know how to manual assign an IP address???

Follow these instructions - http://www.home-network-help.com/set-ip.html - but instead of 192.168.1.101 set it to 192.168.1.5, try that.

How are you trying to connect to the internet anyway?

I'm trying to connect straight from a cable modem. I changed the ip and it connects but when i try to load a web page it says the page cannot be found.

Did your ISP give you any kind of installation CD/instructions? Have you tried them/it?

google I tried firefox and ie

no they didnt give me any but the same modem and internet connection work fine on this computer
