I recently started getting heavy into recording with Cubase and was curious if there was a way I can use my laptop that I no longer use (Compaq R4000, Windows XP, 2-gigs, 80-gig HDD) as a sort of 'add-on' to my desktop. Meaning, I could run Cubase and such off of the laptop but switch to my desktop for other things, but have the two share the same Monitor and Keyboard/Mouse. Also, If the laptop screen could be used as a second monitor to the desktop that would be sweet as well.

If any of this makes sense or is possible let me know! I dont know if any of it has to do with buying a docking station or KVM switch but I thought those were for other things, correct me if Im wrong.

KVM switches are generally used to use multiple computers for one monitor. Thats all the help i can give. Im sure you can use your laptop as a screen but im not sure.

Let me ask this though, would it be efficient to use the laptop this way to be set up strictly for running Cubase? Would I be able to share HDD space between the laptop and the Desktop? Or should I just network the two together and be done with it, put linux on the laptop and have it be a server?

Network it. I'm not sure if the other idea is even possible. And even if it is, I seriously doubt it'll be a easy task.
