Linking PC to phone socket

I need to connect my phone line to my modem but the two are about 20 metres (65 foot) from each other and I have been informed that it is not advised to go over 10 metres (32 foot).

Would I really have problems if I used 20 metre cable or do they just say that to cover themselves in case of any problems ?

y not just plug the modem as close to the socket as possible and run an eithernet cable instead??
