i'm trying to setup wireless internet using a linksys wrt54g wireless router. i ran the cd and downloaded easylink advisor. i ran the program and it took me through the process of connecting the cables step-by-step. well, after connecting them all, it attepts to detect the router. but it comes up with an error saying something like the router isnt supported. well, we meet all the system requirments and we cant figure out why it wont detect properly. we have cable internet if that helps.

you dont need to run the cd, just connect your computer to the computer and type in 192.168.1.1 and the user is admin and the password is admin
there you can setup all your settings just like the cd would.

do you mean connect the computer to the modem? or the router? and where do we go to configure the ip address and the user/admin stuff? not to good with networking, sorry.

Ok... Step by step.

Modem
1. Plug the MODEM into the phone line (DSL) or the Cable tv line (Cable internet)
2. Plug either a Yellow or Red Ethernet cord from the MODEM to the ROUTER (WAN port, or port 1, Port 1 if there is no WAN port)
3. Plug in the Modem

Router
1. Plug in your computer to the next port, make sure the light for that port goes on.
2. Open IE or Firefox and type in //192.168.1.1
3. ID: admin PW: admin

Note: it is best to make the router work, then turn on the wireless internet. BUT it should work fine, and it will be called linksys if you want to connect to it.
Does this all work so far?

ok, i tried all that and it doesnt work. when i type in the ip address, nothing will come up. is there a significance in using a red or yellow cable?

its a crossover cable, meant for deivec to device as opposed to a regular ethernet cable which is device to PC.

Are you connecting wirelessly?
Is the router powered up?

Go start, Run and type in CMD
then in the prompt type ipconfig
What does it say is your default gateway?

Try to use that to connect to the router //defaultgateway (//192.68.0.1)
