Linksys WRT54GL Setup Trouble

Just bought one of these routers. After I set everything up, I couldn't get online. I plugged it into Ethernet and it said I had a connection, but I still couldn't connect to any websites. I connected straight to the modem to see if that was the issue, but I connected right away, so the modem isn't the issue. I double checked that I had everything connected right. All the lights were blinking as they should. Anyone have any ideas?

Shut everything off, modem, router, and computer. Wait for a minute and turn modem on and let it sync up, then turn router on and let it sync up and then turn computer on and see if you get internet. Are you dsl or cable internet? Sometimes dsl internet can be a pain in the butt to go through a router depending on your service.

Did you set your modem to "bridge mode"? You'll have to access your modem's setup page to do this... it's best to follow your ISP's instructions. Bridge mode turns your ISP's modem into pass-through with blinking lights, and hands over modem duties to the Linksys. I had to do this to my BEFSR41 and WRT54GS to get everything to work right with Verizon DSL.

That didn't work :( I'm on Verizon DSL.

OvenMaster - Not sure exactly how to do that. I have a Westel 6100 modem so if you have an idea, let me know. I don't think I had to do that when I had my D-Link router hooked up to it. I didn't have any issues then.

hi,
would you mind telling where you bought it from? and what version it is? i read they are good for customizing and very versatile, but were locked down with newer versions, after v5.

Call verizon and have them tell you how to set it up. You'll probably need some setting changed in the router to allow internet to pass through. I tried one time with that router on verizon and couldn't get it, but i never called verizon for help either.

Might have to clone the mac address of the modem, forgot about that.

Cloning the MAC address didn't work. Looks like I'll have to call Verizon. I'm just afraid they'll say the usual, "it's your router. Call the manufacturer."

By the way, In order to get on the internet, I have to switch back to connecting straight to the modem. When I do that, it doesn't work right away. I have to renew my IP address and then it'll work. Not sure if that hints at something or not...

No, thats normal. You may have better luck contacting Linksys. They were more than happy to help me one time hooking up my router to comcast cable. I did everything to get it to work and couldn't. Called linksys and within a couple minutes was up and running.

Good call. Linksys would probably be more helpful.

That 6100 is exactly the model I have. I saved the instructions that Verizon published in a .pdf file. I can't attach it here (says I'm full up?), so you have a PM.

I called Linksys and they had me change the local IP address from 192.168.1.1 to 10.10.10.1. No idea why they had me do this, but it worked so I'm not complaining.

Thanks everyone for the help. Much appreciated. Networking is one thing that I lag in (and I swear it's black magic) so the help is always great!
