im trying to download linux but with so much to choose from i dont know what to. can someone post me a link please to one file that i have to download and that i can boot from a CD.

it just seems that when i try to download a version of it its link after link after link and its madness and i just dont get it! thanks in advance!

You want this one kubuntu-6.06.1-dvd-i386.iso 3.4G 07-Aug-2006

Disecting that is like this,

Kubuntu-6.06.1 - That's your linux distro (e.g suse, mandriva, ubuntu, kubuntu etc)

dvd - If you dont understand what that means then well.......

i386 - Desinged to be compatable with most intel procesors

.iso - Means the file is a cd/dvd image

Then you have the date it was uploaded and the size.

well just downloaded it and when i get the time later on im going to run it etc! thanks for the help man! i can gaurantee i will have many more questions! :-)

Well this is what happened.

i followed the steps and burnt it to DVD.
i then configured my system to boot from CD
its boots and it brings me to a screen with options.
these are start and install kubuntu, etc

and when i hit enter to start kubuntu it says that it is loading and then thats it and it does this and thats it.

So where have i went wrong? and i was looking forward to Linux.

Thanks in advance :-)

It may go to a blank screen for a while before loading (can't entirely remember, but im pretty sure it does. Have you waited at least 1 minute before shutting down?

It does also take a while to load (you are running it from a cd/dvd.

If the problem persists re-burn and try again. It could also be that what you downloaded was faulty and so you should download one from elsewhere.

Thanks jony. i'll re-download and burn again. it seemed to all be fine but shame it hasnt worked the first time. also yeah im running from a DVD as i have no CD's.

also i waited about 5 mintues before shutting down. and one more question if you will. could you recommend a good forum for linux. i know there are a lot but do you reccomend anyones?

and one more question. python! whats all that about?

Thanks.

ubuntu forums is the best if you run one of the *buntus; otherwise linux questions is good for others. Not to mention computerforum.com:D

Python is a programming language. It is scripted, like Perl, and has a more readable syntax than Java. A good starting language, much better than basic. It is usually installed by default on Linux distros.

Couldn't really suggest any forums (i use linux questions occasionally).

Python as you may know is a programing language. It has an interactive shell (go to a termianl (or konsole) in linux and type in python then press enter) this will get you to the interactive shell, i honestly can't say much about python but the interactive shell can do basic math.

Remember that if you do keep the iso (cd/dvd image) on your hard-drive you wont have to download it every time.

If downloading and reburning doesn't solve your problem try another OS. Xubuntu uses XFCE instead of KDE or GNOME and XFCE runs better on lower spec machines.

No.

It's an installer, it means you can install Ubuntu from within windows, not run Ubuntu from within Windows.

You can probably run it in a virtual machine if you have the software though.

Ubuntu has no impact on your Windows install.
The only way you could lose your Windows install is if you choose to format the parition.
