Linux for old PC

Hi,
I have installed Ubuntu on my main PC(high spec). On this PC I have a dual boot with Windows XP Pro.

I have an old PC:
256MB Ram
60GB HDD

I got rid of Windows Home on this PC. I installed Xubuntu. While I am delighted with Ubuntu I am not convinced about Xubuntu. What are your views on the best Linux distro for my old low spec PC? I want to change from Xubuntu to another distro on this old PC. I have heard good things about

Parsix
Pardus
Granular
Blag
wolvix

would any of these be good for my old PC?

Have you gone over to the ubuntu forums and asked for tweaks? You could probably do a lot of things to help optimize on how it runs.

However, what is the main purpose of this machine? If its just like file sharing or whatever and you don't need a GUI you can just install the command line version of Linux and save even more resources.

Hi tlarkin,
I want this old machine for trying out another Linux distro.
Since I already have Ubuntu, I want to try something different.
I did try PcLinuxOS 2007 but this is too much for 256MB RAM.
 
you may want to look into some Unix distros as well, like FreeBSD or what not to see how those fair too.
 
Parsix is great. they're stable 1.0 is released. it has everything you may want and still loads in less than 15 seconds in my PC. (mine is not old)

More important info is CPU speed and type...

Anyway, most distros will run on older hardware. Even mandriva on pentium 2 class boxes.

Try slackware to get a feel for more 'real' vanilla linux.
 
Or you can use gentoo, which is a kind of build your own linux distro and you can tweak it to run on older hardware. I haven't used it too much but there is a community out there for it.
