linux hard drive switch question

Question:

My server memory is taking a poo, so I would like to switch everything over to a different computer temporarily. Can I just drop the hard drives into a new computer, or will that not work?

Won't work since it has a different motherboard with different hardware. Plus windows will want to reactivate.

Duh, I totally missed he said linux. Been a long day, plus I'm trying to deal with a pain in the butt acer laptop recovery.

In general, yes, just dropping the HD to another machine should work. However, not all hardware may work... it depends on what hardware support is built in the kernel and what drivers your initramfs has. Most distros have a generic kernel/initramfs by default, though, but if you know you have a targeted kernel/initramfs, expect to run into trouble.

Its just the desktop version of Ubuntu. Dropped them in and now this computer wont do anything. Turns on but nothing comes on the screen. Tried a different graphics card and everything. Wondering if a battery pull may fix it. Any ideas?

Are you sure it is the RAM that is giving you a problems? It could possibly be the hard drive that is going bad.

Have you run the program Memtest86+ to test the RAM?

I have pulled a hard drive out of a computer twice that had Linux Ubuntu version 10 installed on it. I put it into a system with a different motherboard and had no problems at all with it.

I would try putting it into another system to see if you can get it to work.

Edit: In the future I would also think about storing valued data on the NTFS filing system since so many other operating systems can read it.
