Can anyone give me a sort-of step by step guide to download Linux properly :) I am trying to put it on my laptop. And honestly the process is confusing me!
Any help would be super awesome!
Thanks

well all distors come in a iso image (cd image) all you need to do is burn that to a cd. you can use nero or http://www.imgburn.com/. then all you need to do is boot your computer with that disk in and probably will have to hit f12 or f11 to enter the boot menu. slect cd drive and it should boot you up to the installer

To download? Or to install?
First tell me what distribution you chosen. Ubuntu? Fedora Core? Than i'll be able to tell you how.

1. In general, most distributions come in images (not pictures; it's a cd/dvd image) which you will have to burn to a cd/dvd. There are many programs which can do that, here are some examples: poweriso, nero, magiciso, alcohol etc.
2. Boot with the cd/dvd inside your cd/dvd-rom drive. (make sure the boot order is set properly: CD/DVD-rom drive before HDD)
3. On some distributions there will appear a menu to ask you what to do next.
Some distributions come in live cd/dvd-s. This means that you can run the operating system from the cd/dvd without having to install it.
4. To install it on the computer, you have to run the installer, which usually appears on the desktop. The installation process is very simple, like installing a program in windows.

There are also some distributions coming in text-based installers. Since i haven't tried one yet, i can't tell you how to install it.

Well, firstly you need to pick which distro to download. Since you're apparently a noob at Linux, I recommend Ubuntu (www.ubuntu.com). Downloading a distro is no more complicated than downloading any big file from the internet, chances are if you're good enough with computers to be able to sign up and post on a forum, you're smart enough to download a linux distro.

Cool, thanks for all the help guys :)!!
I am going to try Ubuntu first. If there are any issues with it I will let you know.
I am obviously a noob at Linux, so thanks for the help.
One other question I have though is, do I need to worry about my drivers working properly on Linux? I have an Acer Aspire 5580.

I have downloaded Ubuntu and then burned it to a disc and changed the boot sequence to IDE CD to no avail. Can you tell me if I am missing a step? I apologize for all the questions.

Did you just burn the ISO file on the disc as a file, or did you actually make a CD out of the image? Simply copying the file on the CD won't work, but most CD burning software should come with a feature that allows you to actually make a CD of the image.
