I have a computer that is just sitting here doing nothing b/c the 90 day trial is done and i dont use it enough to want to spend $150 on an OS, so i'm thinking about putting linux on it. However, choosing the best type of linux is hard and complicated so i'm asking your opinion on whats best for my computer. its a cheap computer that i built at a camp for $600 so it only has about 512MB RAM and maybe 80GB HD.

EDIT: also, how would i go about deleting my existing OS (windows XP buisness edition 90 day trial [my camp was cheap and wouldnt provide anything better])

In my completely unbiased opinion :D you should give Ubuntu a try. Download the .iso, burn it, boot is as a live CD, and then install it. Really quite simple.

 Ubuntu!!! I used to use it and I liked it, but now I can see what i was missing. I would suggest you try something like PCLinuxOS. Just my opinion though. Of course Ubuntu is great for beginners, but once you become more advanced you'll almost definitely want something better. Also, take a look at this Linux distro chooser.

i'm pretty much a begginer, so i don't think i'd mind ubuntu limited features.

OK, you still may want to take a look at that distro chooser. It just ask you questions about your computer knowledge and preferences and then lists the versions that are good for you. give it a try. ;)

thx for the distro chooser link. i took the test and it said either mandriva, kubuntu, ubuntu, or opensuse (or additionally fedora [May not be suitable because:
# May require Linux knowledge] and i dont have any linux experience.

which would u reccomend?

I would suggest OpenSuSE, but I haven't used Mandriva yet. :P I'm sure I will in the near future though. :)

It's a toss-up really, I think they all have live CD's so you can run those without installing anything and see which one you like the most; I use Sun Solaris Express if you want to try something a tad different.

So should i use OpenSuSe or Linspire/Lindows or Kubuntu?

My rating of those distros is (in order from best to worst) openSuSE, Kubuntu, Linspire/Freespire

If openSuSE came up as a result when you did the distro chooser that's probably the best for you.

If I may ask, whats the difference between all these operating systems? Do they have a different interface too?

well, suse is also Gnome, and suse works well with Gnome !!!

Oh, I've only used it with KDE.

You have to admit this is kinda annoying:

Konsole
Klipper
Kwrite
Kmenu
Koffice
Konqueror
Klik
K3B
Kdenlive
digiKam
............................................. and the list goes ON and ON and ON! :D

there's no big difference between linux systems, and also their looks are pretty much the same. they have desktop manager, the two main ones being GNOME and KDE just google them up and you'll see the difference.

a typical example is ubuntu, it's gnome, but if you install opensuse with gnome desktop manager and change its iconsets, you will easily confuse it with ubuntu
