Linux Home Server?

I was just wondering if it was worthwhile to use a linux distribution for a home server. (media, backups, etc.) Is there any software comparable to WHS?

Also, Should media transcoding be done on the server PC or Main PC?

EDIT: I just realized there was a server section. I probably should have posted this there.

I use to have a Linux box as a home server, but just used the standard desktop environment, and networked it to the windows PC's.

If all you want to do is Share Files at Home you really don't need specialized Server Software, that is really for making a Web based Server. I think you are probably trying to make this more complicated then it is.

Any Operating System can Share files at Home. A Web based Server has no fluff, and better Security against Web site Hackers.

SuSe worked good for Me, but when I bought Gigabit Network adapters for all My Home Computers a couple years ago to make Coping files back and forth faster, I could not get the Gigabit Network card to work with Linux.

I switched to XP Home, and just enabled File Sharing, and basically had no additional software installed to keep overhead Low. I even Installed XP on a small 10 gig Partition, and Stored Data on the other Shared Partitions.

I'll be sharing files, maybe putting Minecraft, CoD4 etc. Severs on it, Transcoding media, etc.

So I might be making it too hard but I don't think so.
