I have a old dell laptop I don't use any more and I want to try Linux out just cause I'm curious what it is like. How do I install Linux onto a computer that is already running XP?

just download a linux distro, My fav is fedora but ubuntu is aslo a popular one

note if you install linux you will loose XP. Just want to make sure you are aware of that.

I have never installed a OS, would I install it like any other software. I am aware I will loose XP and that is why im doing this on my old dell that has been sitting in my closet for about a year. I don't use it any more I just want to play with a OS that I am not familiar with.

wll you will download a iso image. fedora needs a dvd and ubuntu can take a cd. burn the iso useing a iso burner software to a disk. put the disk in the cd drive of the computer you want to install it on and start it up and boot it to the cd.

yeah, which requires relocating space. it is possable, but not with puting data in harm, but since he does not need anything, you could use i think gparted

Ubuntu has gparted built in on live CD and the install.
I suggest Kubuntu to be honest, it's got a much nicer interface, same thing as Ubuntu, but (IMO) prettier, as it uses the KDE gui vs. GNOME.
It also comes with Amarok built in, the best ****ing music player ever.
