Linux is pissing me off...

I'm trying to install it on a old laptop, but can't get it to work. Xubuntu takes forever to load even in the trial run. Ubuntu won't load because it requires more RAM than I currently have. Only OS I got to run was Damn small linux, but couldn't get on the internet with it. Here is what I'm working with.

Gateway Solo 5300 notebook.
Pentuim III 900mhz processer.
128MB of RAM.
10-13GB HHD.
D Link wireless 108G adapter DWL-G650.

Any ideas on how I can get this thing to work. Has XP on it now but don't have a key.

Xubuntu takes forever to load even in the trial run.

??? Meaning, via the Live CD? Of course it will take a while to load, it's installing itself onto your RAM, for the most part. Have you tried *installing* Xubuntu and seeing it's speed afterwards? I see no reason why it shouldn't absolutely fly on that system.

Not sure I understand - You mentioned 'trial run' - have you tried the Live CD and decided to try the Alt-CD instead?

Regardless, those specs are more than enough for what it needs to run. Aside from the inherent 'X/K/Ubuntu simply don't like some laptops', the only thing I can think of is the speed of the CD drive?

ubuntu should run on 128 mb ram it did for me, on my old dell c600 lappy, did u try puttin the ubuntu files on a flash drive and instaling that way

Technically linux should be able to run on even less than 128mb of ram, no? Why not just boot linux from a flash drive and use the hdd for storage? Plus, then you could keep another OS on a seperate partition on the hdd.

The reason I went with linux on the laptop was because I was given a XP cd to load on it, but wasn't given a key. So after 30 days it would of locked windows. So far things have worked out. I can surf the web, word process, etc. Basic computer needs with a old laptop what more could u ask for...
