what i am wondering is if i can run linux on the computer in my sig. i have always heard people say you need an intel to run linux. is there truth to this these days? or was that back in the old days and you can run it on both these days? i dont know much about linux but have always been curious. i was thinking of trying opensuse. also, whats some good reading to get the ball rolling?

Your computer can run Linux just fine, actually amazingly at that...and overkill by about 10 times as well.

I can run most any 32-bit distro of Linux on my 733Mhz P3, and many people run different distros on P2s. Linux is easily the least taxing of any OS for outdated computers. The cpu you have now is high-end for NOW.

I'd like to know who told you an Intel was needed to run Linux. I realize some Intel fanboys have gotten ridiculous lately...but this is unbelievable.

thanks for clearing that up steelshivan. i think its just that the people around me dont know as much as they think they do. i think at one time(way back) you did need intel to run linux but i dont really know.

i could still use some suggested reading, im assuming. i figure there is stuff i will need to know:D

no, ive already tried that. im going to try opensuse. that doesnt mean i will stick with it. i just mean manuals or books that will help me learn and apply as i move on.

Start here:

Once you find a distro you want, go here and pick out a specific book to that distro

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw?url=search-alias=aps&field-keywords=linux&x=0&y=0

Also check out Linux centric forums, and typically whatever distro you end up going with they have their own forums to begin with.

You bet! I wouldn't recommend OpenSuSE for someone new to Linux... go Ubuntu. You wont be disappointed. And the support forums are HUGE! You'll want to do a little customizing (adding a maclike dock at the bottom of the screen and that sort of thing) to make it look better (I made a thread that was basically a rant about how bad Ubuntu looks by default.) :P
