Linux on older Pentium 4 computer

Hello everyone -

Can anyone suggest a good Linux distribution for an older Pentium 4 machine? This is not my primary PC, it's mostly a tinkerbox, and since Windows XP is no longer receiving security updates, I need to move on. (RIP XP, best OS ever.)

Here are the specs:
Pentium 4 - 3.0ghz (HT)
2gb RAM - upgraded from the original one stick of memory
300gb Seagate Barracuda hard drive (7200rpm)
Integrated graphics card - I believe it's the Intel 915 chipset
This machine was originally an HP Media Center PC, but I took out the original TV/FM radio tuner since I had no use for it. If there are Linux programs that are out there that can utilize this hardware, I'd gladly reinstall it. I'm just not that familiar with Linux to know.

I have just gotten around to installing Lubuntu, but haven't really messed with it. I'd like to know if anyone can recommend any distros out there that may squeeze more performance out of this computer, or have a similar configuration and have achieved decent results. Obviously, I'm not expecting this machine to perform like a Haswell-based PC with all the bells and whistles.

This computer is hooked up to my living room television, and is mostly used for watching videos on Youtube, internet radio and light web surfing.

Thanks for the feedback.

Yours sounds like a decent P4 setup, RetroComp6730!

I would not hesitate to put any distro with a default Desktop Environment(DE)like LXDE or XFCE, as Troncoso advised. Also, DEs aren't necessary and several distros with simply a Windows Managers (WM) and no DE come to mind should performance be the primary goal to achieve with your setup. Of course, use 32-bit distros.

Debian-based Distros --

antiX
CrunchBang

Slackware-based Distros --

absolute
zenwalk openbox

Ubuntu-based distros --

elementary
salentOS

Other ubuntu-based distros with DEs--

LinuxConsole
LinuxLite
Peppermint5

Other other-based distros with DEs --

Fedora-LXDE
MX-14
Salix-XFCE-14.1
Vector

I'm certain this list will show you something to choose to your liking or point you in a good direction. if not, please tell us more of what exactly you desire in a GNU/Linux experience!
