Linux? or strip down?

I have an ancient Gateway Solo laptop. (pentium III, close to 500 mb ram (upgrade that did not work out) 10 gig hd) it works, even does most of what i want. would linux blow me away on performance? or would i be better off stripping down xp and coaxing it along? i use this laptop for web browsing, email, word 97, and i have to run itunes. (Touch) I-tunes is a slow rapacious system hog! a whole new kind of slow! i am on the verge of downloading linux but i figure ya'll could help me figure this out.

I primarily use Ubuntu. Loaded on a similarly spec'ed computer (Athlon 850, 256MB RAM, 20GB HD) it's quite sluggish. From what I've seen, Windows is typically a good bit faster. If all you're looking for is speed, I'd suggest staying with Windows.

Oh...and on Linux, don't even TRY playing flash videos on a lower-spec machine :P

You can't run iTunes on linux, so stick with XP. Xp is plenty fast anyways on old machines.

Actually...well I've not tried itunes, but with Wine it might be possible to... Hmm, I'll check in my VM :P

Tested, didn't work. Got that it didn't install correctly, error 7 :P I'm pretty sure there are alternatives for Linux, but yeah...it won't work. Even if it did, I guess things like the ipod service wouldn't work either.

Hmm... There are too many darn distro's for Linux :P Haha, but I think I'll give LXDE a shot. It might be going on my Netbook if it seems a bit quicker than Ubuntu on my VM ;P

thanks. i think that i am going to stick with xp. i am thinking that i should just strip down and try to speed up my little beast. Thanks again!

FTW, LXDE is just the desktop environment, not the distro. I would try fluxbox out too, it's super lightweight.
